Provide pre-assessment and design consultation for DOT / PHMSA waiver
request to operate a section of the proposed pipeline at 80% SMYS in a
Class I location. Project involved review of pipe design, material specification,
welding procedures, application and interaction with regulatory
Engineering Critical Analysis (ECA) of 42” girth welds made with automatic
welding per API 1104 Appendix A, 20th edition for weld defect acceptance
criteria. Analysis combined axial stress analysis of pipeline during construction,
testing, and operation; welding procedure qualification including
CTOD testing; and weld defect sizing with AUT.
Provided design review of proposed interstate liquids line for public utility
commission. Work involved review of design considerations used, evaluation
of 80% SMYS waiver application to PHMSA and preparation of direct
testimony for certificate hearing.
Review and provide revisions to pipe welding specification, welder qualification
including material and construction related specifications for double
joint and automatic welding.
Root cause failure analysis of weld cracks during construction of 42”, X-70
pipeline. Metallurgical samples provided allowed analysis of weld sequence
and fracture characteristics to determine cause.
Qualify India pipe mills and SAW pipe mills as pipe suppliers. Provide
specification and construction related specifications for double joint and
automatic welding during construction.
Review and metallurgical analysis of a weld failure during a horizontal
directional drill operation. Work involved field inspection of the failure,
mechanical stress evaluation of drill operation, metallurgical evaluation of
failed weld specimen and review of welder qualification and welding
Performed a review and modification of pipeline specifications with regards
to welding procedures, welder qualification and automatic welding methods
for all grades of pipe and for X70 and X80 in particular. An additional
contract was executed to review one of the pipe mills to ensure the mill’s
compliance with company standards and criteria.
Technical assistance and support for DOT waiver petition request to operate
a new pipeline at an 80% stress level in a Class I location.
Assisted a major distribution company in the Eastern U.S. in re-establishing
a welding procedure to verify the procedures adequacy for joining
pipes with unequal yield strength. The work allowed the company
to use welds performed in the field while maintaining stress levels
below 20% SMYS, thus classifying the line as distribution piping
rather than as a transmission line.
Performed failure analyses of pipe failure during commissioning
hydrotest. Pipe was determined to be over pressurized causing tensile
failure in the pipe and excessive deformation.
Provided metallurgical technical support at the Jindal Saw Pipe Mill in
Baytown, TX. Reviewed and revised the Pipe Specification,
particularly in regards to meeting requirements for the 80% stress level.
Performed stress analysis of pipe during construction, testing and
operation of a 170 mile, 42” X70 line in support of Engineering Critical
Analysis for weld procedure acceptance criteria.
Investigated corrosion of separator vessel and meter run piping including
chemical analysis of liquid and solid samples and corrosion morphology.
Investigated casing design in support of cracked girth weld failure at a
rail crossing including load transfer through soils and vibration analysis.
Hydrotest and metallurgical examination of vintage pipe girth welds for
pipeline integrity evaluation.
On site examination and metallurgical analysis of failed elbow and associated
piping in storage field drip.
Pipe mill inspection to evaluate pipe manufacturing process and inspection
of pipe production at a mill in Anjar, Gujarat, India
Nevada, Arizona, and California
Developed an engineer training and development program to cover
design standards. These standards covered the entire company
system from mains and services, to material selection and testing.
