VECTREN BARE STEEL / CAST IRON PROJECT

The Vectren Bare Steel/Cast Iron (BS/CI) Program is the replacement of all bare steel and cast iron infrastructure over a 20 year period. The program targets the poorest performing mains or those pipe segments identified as being at the highest risk of leaking. The program generally targets the replacement of larger sections of main which will allow for an increase in system pressures while minimizing material costs.

EN Engineering is provided with a general scope of what main is to be replaced, what to replace it with and a running line location. From this information, relocation plans are created using various information sources. ENE has been granted access to Vectren’s server to retrieve map files, GIS mapping and service record information that allows ENE to generate drawings with accurate main locations.

Upon approval of the relocation plans, ENE then enters the design in Vectren’s GIS system where materials and labor are associated with the design entered. Once the design is complete, it is transferred to Vectren’s asset management system, Maximo, which generates an estimate for the main installation. ENE then manually enters material and labor for services in Maximo in the corresponding work order to generate a complete project cost estimate and bill of materials.

Over the past year, ENE has designed roughly 140 miles of BS/CI main replacement across Vectren’s service territory. Vectren’s initial goal was to replace 100 miles per year but has reduced that recently to 60 to 80 miles per year depending on funding limits.

Based on ENE’s knowledge of Vectren’s specifications, access to Vectren programs and quality execution of the BS/CI program, Vectren Regional Managers have requested ENE’s assistance in various other projects to assist with the engineering work load. The additional work requested from Vectren includes public improvement relocation design, ranging from 0.5 miles to 3 miles, main replacement of deterioration piping systems (outside of the BS/CI program), new business main installation design and system improvements encompassing main upgrade planning and design.
