  Recent / Current Projects

(Steel Mill / Pipe Mill Auditing), The recent PHMSA advisory on low yield pipe has prompted many
operators to use the Metallurgy group’s expertise to inspect and audit manufacturing procedures of
steel/plate/coil manufacturers and pipe producers. Our competencies in the manufacture of high
strength steel for line pipe provides clients with quality assessments of production practices that
result in delivery of quality pipe.

Engineering Critical Analysis (ECA) – API 1104 Appendix A
The Metallurgy staff’s expertise in materials and engineering mechanics provides operators with
accurate sizing of weld defect tolerance in automatic girth welding. Our operating experience provides
a unique perspective on right-of-way construction activities. We recently provided an innovative
solution to communicating ECA stress analysis results to the construction site. For construction line
lowering, the allowable pipe stresses were communicated to the contractor by listing allowable
boom heights and spacing, ensuring stresses were held below those allowed in the ECA.

Weld Procedure Development
Our extensive experience in construction and fabrication welding includes development of welding
procedures (construction, in-service welding) for clients construction projects. The procedures are
qualified through NDE and mechanical testing as required by API 1104 and ASME Section IX.

Failure Analysis
The staff performs metallurgical investigations and stress analysis to determine the root cause of
pipeline and component failures. Recent investigations have included stress-corrosion cracking of
line pipe, girth weld cracking, leaking due to burnt steel in vintage pipe, and damage due to
  construction practice.
